On Saturday, March 2, 2024 Pi Day introduced students to single board computers and embedded computing technology, specifically the popular microcomputer known as a Raspberry Pi. This STEM camp used brand-new curriculum – developed by Quanterion Solutions Incorporated – specifically geared toward high school students to pique their interest for pursuing STEM career paths with the goal of energizing and inspiring the workforce of the future. The camp was hosted and organized by the Griffiss Institute.
A total of 16 students from 11 local high schools, some traveling from as far as Syracuse, spent the day exploring IoT devices and their practical application within household products such as doorbells, thermostats, and more. The day capped with an opportunity to present their findings to peers and mentors with a scored speech and presentation. The winning team earned bragging rights and candy for their efforts, with one lucky student receiving their very own Raspberry Pi as a door prize courtesy of Quanterion Solutions. The group included a diverse pool of 12 male and 6 female students.
Pi Day was sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate through the ORION project, which is a collaborative effort between AFRL, Assured Information Security (AIS), Griffiss Institute, NYSTEC and Quanterion Solutions.
