Professionals Explored the Impact of Industry 4.0 on Defense Applications
UTICA, N.Y. (Aug. 5, 2024) –The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) recently sponsored a technical workshop to educate professionals on the impacts of today’s industrial revolution on the defense industrial base. This workshop was hosted at the Innovare Advancement Center in Rome, NY as well as online.
The current 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) has transformed the technology of industrial operations, which enhances the Defense Industrial Base’s ability to innovate and improve the military’s supply chain resiliency. This workshop unveiled Department of Defense contributions to the warfighter and national defense in relation to IoT technology applications.
Professionals explored Industry 4.0 regional applications, organizational benefits, best practices for implementation, and other regional impacts with national implications. Attendees also engaged with subject matter experts representing industries including defense, manufacturing, aerospace, non-profit, cybersecurity, and engineering.
This workshop was provided through ORION, which is a state-of-the-art ecosystem operated by subject matter experts to facilitate the development, test, and evaluation of IoT capabilities. ORION is a collaborative initiative between AFRL, Assured Information Security (AIS), Quanterion Solutions Incorporated, the Griffiss Institute, and the New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation (NYSTEC). Quanterion Solutions, a local technical solutions provider, led the event supported by the Griffiss Institute.
Don Berchoff, a retired Colonel of the United States Air Force and current co-founder and CEO of TruWeather Solutions provided the keynote address. Mr. Berchoff is also an Industry Advisory Board Member to the National Science Foundation (NSF) AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography (AI2ES).
Anthony Macera, Senior Computer Engineer at AFRL Information Directorate and Director of the ORION project was also an event speaker. The instruction was led by a team of subject matter experts at Quanterion Solutions – Neil Fitzpatrick, Alex MacDiarmid, and Cully Patch.
Panelists included Mike Frame of MACNY, the Manufacturers’ Association, Kaylon Paterson of Paterson Aerospace, and Robert Cohen, Ph. D and Senior Fellow of the Economic Strategy Institute. The moderator was Cully Patch, Senior Program Manager at Quanterion Solutions.
The workshop focused on DoD stakeholders and the local defense manufacturing base. A key topic was the impact of Internet of Things (IoT) technology on today’s defense and manufacturing operations.
“This workshop is part of a larger effort to think through the latest defense-related technologies and their associated fundamental challenges,” said Patch, Senior Program Manager at Quanterion Solutions. “The solutions informed members of the Defense Industrial Base, as well as industry, in leveraging IoT technologies to improve their operational effectiveness while building reliability and resilience into the supply chain.”
A UAS Hack event by ORION is scheduled for Aug. 19-23 culminating with ORION’s ribbon cutting on Friday, Aug. 23. The next ORION workshop, Wearable IoT for Healthcare and Defense, will be hosted Oct. 10 at the Innovare Advancement Center in Rome, NY.
